A local saint of Trizina, Saint Leonidis lived in the 3rd century AD. He and seven faithful women were tortured and eventually executed (drowned) by the Romans in 251 AD. The martyred saint's relic washed ashore at Leonidio in the Province of Kynouria.

The holy martyr Leonides an the holy martyrs Charissa, Nike, Galina, Kalisa, Nunekhis, Vasilissa and Theodora suffered at Corinth in the days of Emperor Decius (240-251 AD) They are celebrated on the 16th of April.

Leonides was a teacher of the Church in Peloponnesos. He was brought to Corinth for trial for his Christian faith during Holy week along with seven women. Leonides and the 7 women refused to renounce their faith. Leonides was tortured and when that failed there were condemned for  to all be drowned in the gulf of Corinth. When thrown in it was seen that they walked on the water as if on land, so they were then tied to stone around their necks and again thrown in. Their martyrdom occurred on Holy Saturday.

These candles are lit as a form of prayer, meditation, or devotion, and they are used to symbolize the presence of faith. People may light these candles and say prayers or make requests, believing that their prayers will be heard and answered.
