Agios Paisios of Mount Athos

Celebrates July 12

Patron Saint of Australia

Born as Arsenios Eznepidis was born on 25 July 1924 in Cappadocia during the population exchange between Greece and Turkey. His name was given to him by Arsenios the Cappadocian, naming him after himself and foretelling his monastic future. Saint Paisios the Athonite was credited for many miracles and prophecies, being proclaimed a Saint of the Orthodox Church in 2015. He was a monastic monk in Mount Athos.

It was at Panagouda that Elder Paisios’ fame as a God–bearing elder grew, drawing to him the sick and suffering people of God. He received them all day long, dedicating the night to God in prayer, vigil, and spiritual struggle. His regime of prayer and asceticism left him with only two or three hours each night for rest. He would say that God is greatly touched when someone who is in great suffering does not complain, but rather uses his energy to pray for others.

In 1977, Saint Paisios visited Australia with Father Vasileios of the Monastery of Iviron. Saint Paisios performed a miracle and treated a cancer patient while he was in Australia.

On September 25 2023, Archbishop Makarios of Australia declared Saint Paisios the Guardian and Protector of Australia and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.
