Easter Lantern (Black) - Bringing the 'Holy Fire' home - Anastasi
Orthodox tradition holds that the Holy Fire happens annually on the day of Orthodox Pascha (Orthodox Easter). In the past, a blue light was said to emit within Jesus' tomb, rising from the marble slab covering the stone bed that is believed to be that upon which Jesus' body is to have been buried. Thousands of pilgrims as well as local Christians of all denominations gather in Jerusalem to partake and witness this annual event.
On Easter night as all families gather at church, when the bells ring at midnight to alert us all the ‘Christ has risen’ and then the ‘holy fire’ starts to circulate around the church and the lighting up of a candle ‘Lambathes’. Everyone celebrates and kisses each other and chants ‘Christos Anesti’ this is then followed with the pilgrimage back home with the ‘holy light’. Many use their candle to mark a cross on top of their entrance door for the following years protection.
This lantern helps protect the ‘holy fire’ in case it’s windy or it rains by the time you and the family get home.
This black metal lantern measures 16cm in height and 3.5cm in width, embellished with ribbon and rope and topped with a metal Cross.
